“The concept of ‘the sky is round and the earth is square’ is a typical cosmological view in Chinese culture. The imperial palace armchairs feature a combination of square and round shapes, with the upper part being round and the lower part being square. The design is characterized by a combination of curves and straight lines, fully expressing elegance and a laid-back mood. This imperial palace armchair is made of redwood and large fruit rosewood (Myanmar rosewood). The color is solemn and elegant, the wood is dense and fine, and the polishing is meticulous. The backrest connects with the armrest, which is joined by mortise and tenon joints. The ends protrude and curve back, creating smooth and harmonious lines. The backrest is designed according to the natural curve of the human spine, providing a comfortable sitting position. The upper section is carved with openwork patterns, which are variations of scroll patterns; the middle section remains plain; the lower section is carved with cloud patterns. The intersection of the backrest, the armrest, and the seat surface uses four large openwork corner ribs to enhance the decorative effect from the front view.
Based on the comfortable position of the human back, the armrest of the chair leans backward at an arc angle of 108 degrees, with the arc tilting forward by 28 degrees, creating the most comfortable support for the human shoulders and arms.
The seat frame is dovetailed and veneered, with the thick seat ring and the square seat surface symbolizing the roundness of the sky and the squareness of the earth, presenting a classic and attractive appearance. The edge molding has a concave edge on the top and a convex edge on the bottom, extending to a narrow line at the bottom, a straight waist, slightly protruding spandrels, and an edge line extending to the legs and feet. The square legs taper inward at the bottom with elegant horseshoe-shaped feet, and the feet are decorated with openwork scroll patterns, which correspond with the decorative patterns on the backrest, achieving a unified and harmonious decorative effect. The legs rest on the square base, which is heavy and stable.”
